Ronnie "Beaver" McCan entered the United States Army in November 1970, completing basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, and AIT at Fort Knox KY. Entering as an "SF Baby", he went through the SFQC in 1971 and spent approximately 30 years in Special Forces, of which 16 years were on an ODA with five years as Team Sergeant. He also served as the ROTC SGM at the University of Florida, and later as the CSM for the 112th Special Operations Signal Bn (Abn), Support Battalion, 1st Special Warfare Training Group (Abn), and the 1st Special Warfare Training Group (Abn), all at Ft. Bragg, and the 1st Special Forces Group (Abn), Ft Lewis, WA. His last assignment was the CSM for United States Army Special Warfare Center and School, Ft Bragg, NC.
Ron McCan has been actively involved with the SFA and SF community since his retirement, and he served as the Co-Chairman of the 50th Anniversary Convention (2002) and the Chairman of the 2006 SFA Convention which were both held in Fayetteville, NC. He is also the Vice President of Special Activities for Friends of SOF, and his current job is the Lead Training Specialist, DOTD, Branch 1, USAJFKSWCS (Special Forces Qualification Course). As well as serving as the SFA President, Ron is also on the Board of Advisors for the newly formed Green Beret Foundation.
